The article examines how the contemporary Irish poet Eavan Boland develops a poetics of embodiment consonant with Elaine Scarry's theories of embodiment in The Body in Pain. The article situates Boland within the context of contemporary feminist debates about embodiment and explores her portrayals of historical women whose bodies have been traumatized as well as contemporary women who inflict pain on themselves through dieting and plastic surgery
