Studying rural markets as spaces of economic, political, social negotiations and cultural interactions may inform us significantly about what induces the formation of social movements or nonmovements. This article focuses on popular rural markets as spaces of everyday resistance and as outstanding areas to study the rural public sphere. The article is based on original field data, compiled from over 120 field interviews, in twenty markets in eight different governorates in rural Egypt. Interview data and field observation reveal how Egyptian rural weekly markets act as a social nonmovement opposing neoliberal policies, which have led to the dispossession of agricultural land since 1990s
