This article explores the various types of leadership used in Lebanese small and medium-size enterprises ( SME s). The purpose is to define the roots of the commercial leadership problems in Lebanon and to identify ways to improve business outcomes, taking as a reference point a human-centered management approach called Design Thinking ( DT ). The article investigates whether a DT approach can contribute to better leadership. An inductive qualitative approach has been used to conduct research into this question, with data collected by means of semi-structured interviews with Lebanese SME leaders. Content analysis and lexical and thematic approaches show that there are two dominant issues in Lebanese leadership: a complete denial of employees’ right to access decision making; and an incomplete human-centered management approach, one showing a lack of empathy and an absence of a performance evaluation process
