The aim of this paper is to analyse representations of the past and of Antiquity in Benjamin of Tudela’s twelfth century travel narrative by using analysis of his references to ruins, his descriptions of them and his interpretation of their meaning(s). The final aim is to present a profile of this first medieval travel literature and to link it with works on travel produced during the Classical period. It is hoped that by connecting the experience of travel and travelling during the times addressed, so often ignored by historians of leisure-related mobility, that it might be possible to better understand distinctions between ‘travel’ and ‘tourism’
