This paper provides a historiographical overview of the global development and significance of the mineral springs or ‘spa’ resorts since the eighteenth century. It discusses problems of terminology and identity, and examines the fluctuating fortunes of this kind of enterprise and settlement over a quarter of a millennium. Its main focus is on Europe and North America, and on discussions of the relationships between spa resorts and colonial identities. It advocates the geographical extension of historical research on this kind of health and leisure resort, which is a genuinely global phenomenon, beyond the western cultural paradigms with currently dominate the field
