Using a combination of poll and census tract data, this paper examines the relative stretrength of ethnic and class determinants of the voting patterns of three Winnipeg multiple member constituencies in the provincial elections of 1949 and 1953. Compared to the patterns in the provincial elections of 1941 and 1945, class voting remained high in Winnipeg South and Winnipeg Centre, but ethnic voting became stronger in Winnipeg North — the strongest base for left‐wing parties in previous elections. We argue that these changes can be explained as a local effect of the larger changes in international relations between the capitalist and communist blocs during the Cold War
