This paper examines the effects of individual characteristics on husbands' propensities for intermarriage in 1871 and 1971 using data from the 1871 and 1971 federal Censuses of Canada. The analysis is undertaken by means of logit regression. When the main effects were considered, being native born, urban resident, and literate had the separate and significant effects of increasing the odds of ethno‐religious exogamy for husbands in 1871. Only literacy had a similar effect in 1971. Age does not appear to have been a factor in 1871 but appears to indicate decreased odds of intermarriage for husbands 65 years of age and over in 1971. The results of the second model showing the effects of husbands' nativity, level of literacy and rural/urban residence as they are conditioned by age show that there appear to be significant interaction effects between both nativity and literacy by age on the likelihood of assimilation in 1871 and 1971. There also appears to be a significant interaction effect of urban rural/residence and age in 1971, but not in the 19th century
