This article examines the Partido Popular's victory in the 12 March 2000 Spanish general election. Based on an analysis of the results the idea that the PP's absolute majority constitutes a historic shift of the centre of gravity of Spanish politics from the centre-left to the centre-right is rejected. Instead an alternative explanation of the victory is postulated which emphasises: the favourable economic cycle; the PP's handling of regional nationalism; the inadequacies of the main opposition parties; the PP leader, Jos Mara Aznar's ability to project a centrist and moderate image
