This article analyses Joseph Brodsky’s reconfiguring of Vergil’s pastoral poetry, specifically, the reshaping of the pastoral space in the Russian poet’s eclogues. As Brodsky subtly alludes to his Roman counterpart, he asserts his place within the genre of pastoral by making the pastoral landscape the focal point of his innovation. Brodsky locates the familiar locus amoenus of ancient pastoral in the winter terrain, from where poetry written in Cyrillic draws its beauty and its inspiration
