Documentation and Musealisation of Performance. The musealisation of performance seems to be a controversial activity. First, the performance is, by nature, short-lived and mainly focuses on the performer’s body. This is very different from the traditional art objects museums are used to display. Then, the recording, or other “associated information”, are often discarded as secondary or perceived as remnants. Nowadays, museums and FRAC integrate performances in their collections through strategies which tend to preserve the integrity of the artists’ view. Through this study of the musealisation of two performances -Autoportrait(s) by Gina Pane and Intime et personnel by Esther Ferrer – respectively at the Musée national d’art moderne du Centre Pompidou and at the FRAC in Lorraine, this article shows that strategies can be implemented during the “selection” and “presentation” of performances or associated objects and that documentation plays a key role in this process. Finally, this article argues that documentation is not always second best to the performances themselves in the musealisation process. How to manage this delicate balance between the documentation and the performance, and the knowledge related to them, is crucial for the musealisation process
