Early Holocene Complexes of the Multilayered Site Badai 5 (Southern Angara Region)

Purpose. The article is devoted to the introduction into scientific circulation and analysis of the archaeological complexes (cultural layers 1, 1a) of the Early Holocene of the Badai 5 site, located on the right bank of the Belaya River (Southern Angara region). Results. It has been established that primary knapping is characterized by a combination of volumetric and nonvolumetric cores for the production of flakes and blades (rarely microblades). Terminal-edge cores for blades, bladelets, and microblades, including those used in the Saikai method, supplement them. It is pointed out that the toolkit includes end-scrapers, side-scrapers, knife-shaped tools, perforators, angle burins, end-notched tools, a chisellike tool, and a point on a blade. It is noted that the excavated area can be characterized as part of a huge workshop site. It is proposed that the cultural remains are dated to the Early Holocene (~ 11.7–8.2 ka cal. BP). Analogies have been established in the nearest synchronous complexes of the Southern Angara region. Conclusion. The conducted analysis and the obtained results on the complexes of cultural layers 1, 1a of the Badai 5 site clarify the existing ideas about the cultural dynamics at the turn of the Pleistocene and Early Holocene and emphasize the need for additional research
