This article offers a situated history of Dave Purchase, an important harm reduction activist who started Point Defiance, one of the first syringe exchanges in the United States. Purchase helped place harm reduction at the core of the drug policy reform movement by running a national syringe clearinghouse and inspiring harm reduction activists and advocates through example. This article builds on intensive interviews conducted in 2012 to create a historically contextualized cultural biography of Dave Purchase
