This study analyzed 169 projects on tourism geography funded by the Youth Science Fund of the NSFC in order to understand the generational characteristics of research of young tourism geographers. The results are as follows: 1) the research topics are diversified, showing obvious interdisciplinary characteristics; 2) the research shows a cultural turn, and studies have gradually become more "people-oriented"; 3) the research questions are closely related to reality; 4) the research scale ranges from macro to micro; 5) in terms of theory and method, researchers tend to follow rigorous procedures to carry out their studies; and 6) the spatial characteristics of the institutes where the projects are conducted are widely distributed but are clustered in small circles, which is similar to the spatial distribution of the research cases. These characteristics are related to the guidance of the NSFC, the attributes of cross-discipline academic exchanges at home and abroad, and the demonstrative role of leading Chinese research institutes. Young scholars are part of a generation of rationalism, and at a time when theoretical thinking is weak and application practice is strong, it is the mission of every tourism geographer to reconsider their research questions and clarify the true value of research
