The paper presents an overview of the Internet related studies carried out in Russia within the fields of social sciences and psychology. The overview briefly covers the earliest studies in the field and a critical review of the current status of the studies; some prospects for the nearest future are outlined. It is shown that the earliest adopters of the new research paradigms — namely, computermediated communication (CMC) and cybepsychology, were Vygotskian psychologists; later social scientists joined the CMC research field. The discussion concludes with the claim that the Vygotskian paradigm is among the most heuristic approaches to be followed in future studies
