Objective: The knowledge base and skills required for effective practice in integrated and behavioral health care are poorly specified. This study aims to identify types of knowledge and skills necessary for effective practice by empirically testing the content and structure of a model of integrated health care knowledge. Method: Participants (N = 154) worked in integrated primary care, specialty medical care, and specialty mental health with an average of 5.75 years (SD = 5.82) of experience in integrated care. They completed a 36-item self-report online questionnaire—developed from constructs identified in a prior systematic review of integrated care models—about necessary knowledge in four subdomains: medical diagnoses, psychiatric diagnoses, screening measures, and interventions. Results: Findings from confirmatory factor analyses indicated that behavioral health providers working in adult integrated health care settings must have knowledge of specific medical diagnoses, psychiatric diagnoses, medical and mental health screening measures, medications, levels of care, lifestyle interventions, and brief substance abuse and therapeutic interventions. Conclusions: The results provide evidence of the specific diagnostic categories, screening measures, and interventions that constitute essential integrated health care knowledge for behavioral health providers. Implications for practice and future research are discussed
