The search for alternative and complementary treatments, of holistic and integrative feature, has been increasing exponentially in the last decades in both medicine and dentistry. The main objective of this study was to review the world literature, using Medline (via PubMed), Scielo, Scopus and Lilacs platforms, to identify studies that have been published in scientific journals that brought the use of herbal therapies in the most diverse stomatological diseases. Initially, 327 articles related to alternative and complementary therapies in stomatology were found, and among them, 18 exclusively related to phytotherapy were selected. The vegetal species most used in the treatments was the Aloe vera plant and the disease with the most phytotherapic options was recurrent aphthous stomatitis, administrated specially in gel form. The progressive insertion of alternative, integrative, and complementary treatments, such as phytotherapy, is a reality increasingly present in the medical field in general. In addition, Brazilian biodiversity combined with lifestyles that strive for better health, with the minimization of undesirable adverse effects of traditional drugs, emphasize herbal medicine as an increasingly exciting option on the national and world scenario
