The article deals with the symbolic aspects of the personal union of Mary Tudor and Prince Philip (later — King Philip II of Spain) placed in the context of gender expectations of the 16th century and constitutional problems caused by the “foreign marriage” of the ruling Queen. In spite of the conditions of the marriage treaty, approved by the Parliament and aimed at the limitation of Philip’s intervention in English affaires, close study of the representation of his joint power with his wife, supports the modern scholars’ notion of the dismantling of initial constitutional barriers. The perception of the Queen’s sovereignty gradually transformed into the theory of co-monarchy or double monarchy
