The diversity of the members of the Confederation of the Cinque Ports comprising towns of different levels of development as well as of various lordship situation, a relative ease of the admittance into the confederation, together with substantial privileges and rights due to their members — all these pose a question concerning the way these privileges were really distributed and maintained, the way the Cinque Ports’ membership and a special relationship between its in towns (e.g. head port — limb) influenced the order and administration within the towns in a particular town, as well as the strength of this connections and affiliations. In the article these issues are considered through the analysis of the history of the custumal writing of the Ports that occurred mostly during the 14th — 16th centuries and through the comparison of some aspects of these texts. The substantial collection of texts (more than 30) allows to get a certain reflection of interrelations between the members and of the general policy of the confederation towards its members
