At last, a meticulously researched and stylistically elegant analysis that neither completely sanctifies nor vilifies the Turkish leader who has become one of the great bete noires of many of the Kurdish people, among others. Professor Yavuz not only deftly probes Erdogan’s populist strengths and accomplishments, but also his marginalization of Turkey’s democratic institutions. Furthermore, in the author’s own words, “this book constitutes more than a political biography of Erdogan. It is also a biography of a Turkish society that has evolved and diversified dramatically since the 1923 founding of an independent Republic” (p. 6). Along the way
