For a long time extracted from natural yerba trees, it was exploited without major effects in the forest that sheltered it until the end of the 19th century. However, this situation changed when it began to be exploited commercially, and radically when it was cultivated. This article aims to show the transformation suffered by the environment of Misiones from the implementation of the yerba trees cultivated at the beginning of the 20th century. For this, the Cooperative "Productores de Yerba Mate de Santo Pipó SCL" has been taken as a case study, since it was the first specialized cooperative and it was founded by Swiss immigrants in order to dedicate themselves to the cultivation of yerba mate . Studying the production of yerba mate through the prism of environmental history allows us to explain the impact caused by human beings in the Misiones territory. In this sense, the arrival of Swiss immigrants had a special impact on the move from an extractive economy to a productive one, as they helped to root it as an intensive crop and explain the reason why Argentina is the main world producer of yerba mate, followed by for Brazil and Paraguay. This proposal is organized in three parts: a first one gives an account of the backgrounds of the yerba, emphasizing the characteristics of the extractive economy; a second one analyzes and describes the arrival of professionals who start the production of the "green gold" on a large scale, and in the last one, are explored the changes generated by the implantation of the cultivated yerba mate
