Fronteiras e disputas por propriedade

This text investigates the Indian villages in the North of the State of Rio de Janeiro, at the turn of the 18th to the 19th centuries. We acknowledge the villages (aldeamentos) as one of the main branches of administration and as the Portuguese Crown’s strategy for gathering native peoples and promoting the colonization of those lands. Due to their location at frontier areas, these villages were faced with the constant presence of groups of settlers, the clergy, Crown agents and others. Thus, land destined to the villages was recurrently subject to rent and emphyteusis, with neglect over due payment. This text, therefore, specifically analyses land occupation and the strategies that ended up transforming land destined to communities into private property
