In the Los Angeles grassroots gay adult film scene of the late 1960s and early 1970s, stardom was often inseparable from community engagement and political action. Judy Coleman was a key star in that milieu, who appeared in films and centred her activist work within the gay community. This article argues that stars like Coleman, who self-identified as bisexual, can generate a kind of ‘solidarity stardom’ by having a cohesive effect on industrial, creative, and audience-driven contexts dominated by monosexuals
