This article explores the categorical confusion surrounding erotica auteur Radley Metzger’s 1973 film Score, which defies conventions of the sexploitation genre (particularly its attendant gendered expectations) and encroaches on pornography. Tracing the film’s critical and commercial reception from its original theatrical exhibition through its recent re-emergence on home video via distributor Cult Epics allows us to see how various parties have understood it with reference to genre and imagined audience at specific moments and through particular logics and ideologies – sexual and otherwise
