President's Note Baki Tezcan The "President's Note" briefly summarizes recent news from the Ottoman and Turkish Studies Association (OTSA). Time-dependent news and information are sent to members by email and/or posted to H-Turk, our H-Net network (https://networks.h-net.org/h-turk). We also share our announcements, including those for our monthly "What is up in Ottoman and Turkish Studies?" (W'OTSAp) Zoom meeting series and occasional Zoom meetings in the series Turkey Now! and The OTSA Co-Op, with non-members through monthly e-mails. If you would like to receive these announcements, please send an e-mail to our web editor, Selin Onuk, at [email protected]. OTSA is a membership organization. OTSA holds its regular members' meeting, including the announcement of awards, in conjunction with the annual Middle East Studies Association conference in the fall of each year. Annual dues entitle members to receive the Journal of the Ottoman and Turkish Studies Association, stand for election to become Board members and officers, and to serve on OTSA committees. Annual dues and contributions fund the annual OTSA awards and cover the minimal administrative costs of the organization as well as those associated with publishing and delivering JOTSA. Recognizing that earning power varies enormously among our current and potential members, we invite you to choose the membership category that best fits your budget. There is no difference among most of the categories in the status and benefits they offer—except our new "International Membership," which does not include a hard copy of our journal. If you are not currently an OTSA member and would like to join, please access our website at http://www.ottomanturkishstudiesassociation.org/ and click on "Subscribe Now" under "Membership & Donations." A warm welcome to newly joining and rejoining members. Hoş geldiniz! [End Page 5] Winners of OTSA Awards and Prizes in 2022 Our annual award ceremony took place in person—after two years of remote meetings on Zoom—on Thursday, December 1, during the Middle East Studies Association Annual Meeting in Denver. It was great for our members to meet each other again after our last in person meeting in 2019 in New Orleans. As some of our winners and presenters could not be there in person, we ran a hybrid meeting, which also allowed some of our members to participate remotely. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to our Board members, who constituted the committees and acted as Board liaisons; all the chairs and members, who served in our selection committees; and to every undergraduate student, graduate student, and scholar who applied to our awards and prizes. I would also like to thank, one more time, the committee chairs for their notes on the prize winners' works, which I reproduced below with only minimal editing. In addition to everyone who made the prize cycle of 2022 a success, I am grateful to our members whose membership dues finance the OTSA Graduate Student Paper Prize and the OTSA Book Prize. We also owe a great deal of gratitude to all our members whose donations created the funds for the OTSA Undergraduate Scholarship, the Vangelis Kechriotis Memorial Travel Grant, and the Yavuz Sezer Article Prize in the History of Architecture and the Urban Environment. The OTSA Undergraduate Scholarship was awarded by a committee comprised of Aslıhan Gürbüzel (chair), James Ryan, Kameliya Atanasova, and Nilüfer Hatemi. Selim Kuru was the Board liaison for this committee. The winner was Michael Aboutboul, a UCLA undergraduate student who plays the cümbüş (as well as the ney): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yymRp5iX32Y. The OTSA Graduate Student Paper Prize Committee members were Vladimir Hamed-Troyansky (chair), Burcu Karahan, and Sarah Fischer. Benjamin Fortna served as the Board liaison. The winner was Christopher Whitehead, a graduate student at Ohio State University. In the words of Vladimir, Christopher's paper, "The Early Career of Köprülü Mehmed Pasha: An Archival Reconstruction," examines the rise to power of Köprülü Mehmed Pasha (grand vizier, 1656–61), the founder of the Köprülü dynasty, which came to dominate Ottoman politics for the rest
