An observational study was conducted to investigate older people’s ability to function effectively in a standard (non-custom design) kitchen. The goals of the study were to: (1) document behaviors observed during meal preparation; (2) identify problems independent elderly people have in the routine preparation and clean-up of meals in their home; and (3) recommend design modifications for the standard kitchen to meet the needs of older users. Participant observation, oral interviews, and video taping of meal simulation were used to collect information on meal preparation, kitchen design, fixtures and appliances, and storage from 14 seniors living in their own homes. Though able to prepare a simple meal, all subjects demonstrated some limitations in using a standard kitchen. Problems were identified with storage cabinets, counter surfaces, and major appliances. Recommendations are made for modifying kitchen-design standards to accommodate older users
