Suicide in art, as in life, occurs rarely but when it does the viewers react to the special poignancy of this theme. In looking at examples of visual works representing the last two thousand years, differences become apparent in the way self-termination is portrayed. While some of these changes reflect an expansion of aesthetic knowledge, other trends are connected with the history of self-injury in western civilization. Modern concepts of suicide prevention are directly illustrated by these visual themes
