The performances of 15 schizophrenics were compared with those of 15 controls of similar mental test status and educational background on a series of problem-solving tasks monitored by an automatic problem-programming machine. In methods of solution used and in terms of an index that reflects the ability to conduct the required inquiry efficiently, the groups did not differ significantly. The results of the studies thus far reported on the system-analyzing ability of schizophrenics and the results from research on their logical competence indicate that schizophrenics are only slightly inferior in the execution of those mental functions required for normal performance on these problem-solving tasks
