This study, exploratory in nature, was conducted at an Israeli kibbutz where 54 youths, aged 13 to 17 yr., were queried regarding their self-concept and alcohol use. The Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale (6) was given along with an anonymous, precoded instrument developed in previous research conducted in Israel and the United States (2, 3). Because the sample is representative of only a limited population, the study's external validity is restricted. Correlations of the scale items were positive and of moderate magnitude; Pearson ss ranged from .278 to .658, indicating a common referent for self-esteem among the scale's 10 statements. The range of mean scores was 1.69 (SD = .63) to 2.60 (SD = .65), with 1 = high self-esteem and 4 = low self-esteem. A Student's t showed no significant difference on self-concept (t = 1.27, P > .lo) between the 37 youths who drank (M = 2.01, SD = .49) and the 17 youths who abstained (M = 2.19, SD = .39) Those 16 youths who drank regularly, i.e., at least once a week, tended toward lower self-concepts (M = 2.05, SD = .42) than the 21 youths who drank less often (M = 1.99, SD = .53; t = 1.98, p < .lo). These exploratory findings suggest a weak tendency for the association of self-concept and alcohol use among kibbua adolescents. A closer examination of the issue's multidimensionality, however, is required to understand more fully the relationships between alcohol use and personaliry
