The author posits six principles central to FL teaching, which are illustrated by examples from German and English. Teaching the irregular, or the exceptional, before the regular or usual is more productive than the current practice in FL classrooms. Similarly, it is better to emphasise constructions in the target language that are clearly different from those in the LI. The validity of teaching informal varieties of the L2 comprises the second principle. Teachers are encouraged to be descriptive rather than prescriptive in their approach, to be observers as well as purveyors of language
