This paper shows how biophysical resource inventory data can be used to improve the agricultural land use in Nepal. Using the Kailali district as an example, a modified FAO suitability assessment scheme was used and all land mapping units in the district were evaluated for growing double annual crop rotation sequences under rain-fed conditions and triple annual crop rotation sequences under irrigation. Quantitative comparisons between current land use and improved land use based on optimum suitability showed that, based on currently available yields, the agricultural area can be expanded and overall production can be increased by 96 percent under rain-fed conditions, and by 230 percent under irrigation. By careful maintenance of organic matter, improved use of appropriate crop rotation sequences and modest applications of artificial fertilizers it is possible to maintain long-term soil fertility and to improve the overall crop production in the district
