The Bamboutos Mountains (highest elevation, 2,740 m) in West Cameroon are one of the volcanic massifs on the major fault that extends from the Gulf of Guinea to the Tibesti Highlands. They are in Bamileke country and rise above a densely populated piedmont. It was not until the 1970s that the local rural population moved from the surrounding area into the mountains which hitherto had been used only for livestock grazing. The main reasons for this recent migration are the lack of modern agricultural techniques, impoverishment of soils, and declining crop yields in the foothill zone, together with the attractive potential for agricultural and pastoral activities in the mountains. The occupation of the mountains was rapid and destructive. The steepness of the slopes and relatively high altitude made the land ecologically fragile. Erosion and overgrazing are leading to landscape instability and environmental threats are being intensified by severe conflicts between farmers and pastoralists.
