Project Area 6 of UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB-6) included activities in 21 areas in the mountains of five Western European countries (Austria, France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland), and in most of the mountain ranges of the former USSR. This paper reviews these activities, beginning with an introduction to the objectives of MAB-6 as defined in 1973. Particular attention is given to the development of conceptual models and of approaches to the involvement of local people in MAB-6 projects. It is concluded that only some of the objectives defined in 1973 were realized. Institutional factors were primary limitations, and these are explored. Yet MAB-6 activities contributed to scientific knowledge and the lives of mountain people, not only in the project areas but in many others. The concepts, scientific knowledge, and organizational experience deriving from MAB-6 have great potential for furthering the needs of mountain people around the world
