The skeletal maturity of 711 children of both sexes, aged from birth to six years, belonging to two socio-economic classes, was compared with that of British children and with each other, by the method of Tanner, Whitehouse and Healy (1962). Up to age 1·5 years, skeletal development of Baghdad children in both classes was on average more advanced than that of their British counterparts. After age 2 years Class B (poorer) children fell below the British standard, while Class A (richer) children continued to be advanced until about the age of 3–4 years, after which they also fell below their British counterparts. Thus Baghdad children, like African children, have genetic potential for more rapid skeletal development in early life than European children. The weights and heights of Class A children in Baghdad are close to those of their British counterparts. After age 4 years, weights continue to be similar, but heights fall below the British standards. The weights of Class B children fell below the British standard in the early months of the first year of life, the heights a few months later. The difference between Class A and Class B reflects the unfavourable environmental influence on the latter group
