Rudolf Arnheim’s essay “To the Rescue of Art” argues that David Carrier’s discussion of ‘aesthetic atheism’ can be criticized by appeal to the vocabulary of gestalt psychology. In reply, Carrier explains the strengths and limitations of Arnheim’s approach to aesthetics and argues that Arnheim’s work does not effectively rescue art. Drawing on work discussed recently in Leonardo and further developing his earlier arguments, Carrier describes in a general way the problems he perceives to be inherent in Arnheim’s analysis
