Umberto Eco is a professor of semiotics at the University of Bologna, Italy, and the editor of a journal of semiotics. His ambitious book, A Theory of Semiotics [1], is the culmination of many years of research and publication in this field. Following unsuccessful attempts to update and to translate into English his previous writings (principally La struttura assente), Eco decided to write this text in English, for, as he states in the Preface, 'to re-write in another language means to re-think'. Since then it has been re-translated into Italian and published as a new work
