The photographic studio of Lehnert & Landrok, active in Tunesia and Cairo in the early years of the twetienth century, specialised in producing images of the landscapes, architecture and people of North Africa. Made in large part for a European audience, the work was originally distributed through a series of monographs, as well as being sold from their own shops in the form of original prints, heliogravures and reproduction gravure and lithographic postcards. 1 Monographs by Lehnert & Landrock include the following first editions: Tunis et Carthage: 30 Picturesque Views, Tunis: Lehnert & Landrock [c. 1905–10]; Nord Afrika, Preface by Ernst Kühnel, Wasmuth: Berlin 1924; L'Afrika du Nord, Paris: Flandrin 1924; In the Land of the Pharoahs: 76 Artistic Views, Cairo: Lehnert & Landrock [c.1926]. Monographs with some photographs by Lehnert and Landrock include: [Banse, Ewald, ed.], Frauen des Morgenlandes, Zurich: Fussil 1929; [Sperling & Cooper, eds.], Egitto: Pesoggio, Costumi, Architectura, Milan [no publisher listed] 1929; Ägypten: Landschaft, Volksleben, Baukunst, Text by Ludwig Borschardt and Herbert Ricke, Berlin: Wasmuth 1929. Since the 1980s, this work has enjoyed the renewed attention of scholars and collectors. 2 This author proposes a close examination of a subset of the Lehnert & Landrock oeuvre, a series of figure studies of North African people made by Lehnert from 1904 to 1914, and again from 1930 to 1939, as a method of exploring East-West interactions and imaginings
