In this essay I will attempt to sketch the historiography of the history of photography, concerning myself mainly with the histories that were published between 1839 and 1939 in book form rather than in periodicals. This is therefore, first a study of how photographic history was presented by the medium 'history book' and second an attempt at finding the sources for certain approaches to and changes in the writing of photographic history
