The achievement of art photographers in Japan during the inter-war years is relatively unknown in the West. The dearth of surviving material and the prominence of Western Modernism in standard histories contribute to this lacuna. But, as this modestly-sized exhibition catalogue makes clear, pictorial and modernist photography thrived in Japan during the 1920s and early 1930s. Uncovering this history is a delight to the eye and enriches our understanding of the development of art photography worldwide
