A visitor to the Harry Ransom Center, on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin, is soon rewarded. An exhibition hall, containing changing displays of material drawn from the Center's rich collections, lies immediately beyond the foyer.' Before entering this gallery, however, the visitor is confronted with two kiosks. The kiosks are architecturally fashioned to resemble venerable temples, and appropriately so, for these cubicles enclose two great treasures. The first houses the Gutenberg Bible, one of only forty-eight surviving copies, made in 1455 by Johann Gutenberg and the first substantial book printed with movable type. The second contains the first permanent photograph, View from the Window at Le Gras, dating from 1826-1827 and made by Joseph Nicephore Niepce (1765–1833). This last object, acquired by the Harry Ransom Center in 1963 from the collector and historian of photography Helmut Gernsheim, was recently the subject of an international symposium.Footnotesu2 For brief background information concerning Niépce, the making of the first photograph, and the role of Helmut Gernsheim (1913–1995) in preserving the plate, see: http://www.hrc. utexas.edu/ collections/photography/holdings/ gernsheim/ and also http://www.hrc. utexas.edu/ exhibitions/ permanent/wfp/ For brief background information concerning Niépce, the making of the first photograph, and the role of Helmut Gernsheim (1913–1995) in preserving the plate, see: http://www.hrc. utexas.edu/ collections/photography/holdings/ gernsheim/ and also http://www.hrc. utexas.edu/ exhibitions/ permanent/wfp/ Notes For brief background information concerning Niépce, the making of the first photograph, and the role of Helmut Gernsheim (1913–1995) in preserving the plate, see: http://www.hrc. utexas.edu/ collections/photography/holdings/ gernsheim/ and also http://www.hrc. utexas.edu/ exhibitions/ permanent/wfp
