This is a quiet, subtle picture, the pleasure of which derives from its seemingly effortless combination of elements. What one notices first, perhaps, is the near-Euclidean geometry of the image. The top of the tilted lamppost coincides with the apex of the triangle formed by the curtains. They in turn are framed by the rectangular forms of the window, the wall, the street, and, of course, the edges of the negative that enclose the whole assemblage. The textures of stone and brick and wood and cloth indicate that this is not an elegant residential neighbourhood. It lacks amenities such as flowers and trees, or even window boxes, and everything seems plain and slightly shabby. The illumination is uniform and very muted as if the sky were overcast or the street too narrow to allow for much sunshine. Aside from such hints, however, the viewer has no clues as to date and place
