The Gardner collection of photographs is a group of approximately 1000 photographs of landscape views that were purchased from the 1890s to the 1920s for use as illustrations in geology classes taught at Harvard University (figure 1). The collection is named after George Augustus Gardner, a Boston businessman of the 1890s. This is the story of why George Gardner's name became connected with these geological photographs, and the growth and subsequent decline in the use of the collection. The Geology Department records and other sources housed in the Harvard University Archives, as well as extensive correspondence files which survived with the photographs, provide a wealth of information from which the complete history of the collection can be reconstructed
