The question of classed versus unclassed maps can be rephrased as a question of how many classes to use. An unclassed map has as many classes as there exist unique data values in the distribution. However, not all of these classes may be necessary if the map reader cannot discriminate among the graphic values representing unique numerical values. This paper presents an optimal classification scheme that minimizes the number of classes for a given level of value discrimination. Results show that far fewer classes than those found in an unclassed map are necessary to portray the underlying spatial structure of the data distribution.
