Electro-optical colormation methods have been widely employed in the TV industry and remote-sensing field for visual display of image data ; however, its use in the production of color maps is relatively new, and developing rapidly. This paper examines one such system installed at Rome Air Development Center, Rome, N.Y. regarding its applicability for producing thematic maps. Using digitized image data, two analytical models were developed for producing thematic maps: Model 1 takes the z-value as scalar for producing single-subject maps, and Model 2 takes the z-values as a vector for multi-subject maps. Preliminary experiments conducted using landuse categories have produced color transparencies rated as excellent in quality. The electro-optical colormation technologies are currently available commercially, and will be cost-effective in the near future
