Completion test cognitive maps based on a standardized base map can yield valuable information for large population subgroups that can be objectively compared. By automating the tedious chore of manual measurement of the designative characteristics on this type of cognitive map, large samples can be manipulated. A computer program, COGMAP, was developed to use a scan line technique that allows coding of any enclosed mapped image. The program will produce aggregate cognitive maps of the study region for any subgroup that can be identified through coded information. A case study of Appalachian cognitive maps is presented to demonstrate the procedure
