Visual Estimation of Graduated Circles

The study examines the underestimation phenomenon with graduated circles. It argues that underestimation is the outcome when the method of ratio estimation is used, and that underestimation is a special case when the method of magnitude estimation is used. This is supported by the results of two experimental studies by Chang and Cox. The study presents a classification system that would encompass all possibilities of the estimation of graduated circles. The application of the classification system is also demonstrated.L'auteur se penche sur le phenomene de la sous-estimation dont s'accompagne l'utilisation des cercles gradues. Il cherche a demontrer que la sous-estimation se produit systematiquement lorsque l'on utilise la methode d'estimation des rapports, alors qu'elle survient dans des cas particuliers quand on emploie la methode de l'estimation des grandeurs. Les resultats de deux etudes experimentales effectuees par Chang et Cox corroborent cette these. L'auteur propose un systeme de classification qui engloberait toutes les possibilites d'estimation des cercles gradues. L'application de ce systeme de classification est egalement demontree
