A careful cartographic and geographic scrutiny of anymap frequently reveals errors and design flaws. These problems, together with the amount of spatial generalization required ata given scale, affect how the untutored map reader perceivesand interprets the map. This paper is a self-critical analysis ofthe shortcomings of the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs' map,Indian Land Areas. The potential misinterpretations are evaluatedin the context of a discussion concerning the complexAmerican Indian landscape. Bureau of Indian Affairs' etsur laquelle il a déjà travaillé.
