Class-interval selection is viewed as the problem of maximizing an objective function subject to one or more constraints on a feasible solution. A previously-developed method for optimizing the visual correlation between two choroplethic maps, one of which has its classintervals already specified, is extended to include weighting enumeration districts by land area, considering the internal homogeneity of mapping categories, placing a lower limit on class size, and using a regionalization as the pre-specified referent with which visual similarity is to be maximized. Examples presented for all of these elaborations suggest that, although the method must be used with caution when the intercorrelation is low, this optimization approach might be adapted to a variety of problems in statistical mapping.
