The structure of introductory cartographic education advocated by popular texts may no longer suit the times and the discipline. Cartographic education needs to respond to changes in the traditional and emerging mapping sub-disciplines: to changing visions, administrative realities, and technological advances that offer new opportunities. Proposed is a reorganization of the curriculum to remove the need to teach fundamentals of spatial data in introductory cartography. Instead, it would insist on prerequisite knowledge. That would allow higher priority to be given in introductory cartography to expansion of our view of space and its representation, to advances in graphics and media technology, to the theory of communication, visualization, and design, and to professional code and conduct. A call is made for professional organizations to coordinate the design and distribution of introductory lecture notes, laboratory exercises, anecdotes, and teaching aids of other types
