James White, as Canada's Chief Geographer in the Department of the Interior from 1899 to 1909, was responsible for developing his office from a one-man operation into an active organization. This office was distinguished for three major accomplishments: the production of a standard base map of Canada for use by all government departments; the publication of the 50-sheet Chief Geographer's Series that was the forerunner of the National Topographic System; and the publication of the First Edition of the Atlas of Canada
