The time-consuming procedure of determining X-Y map coordinates by hand can be avoided through use of an electronic coordinate digitizer. Equipment particularly suited to cartographic work is now available, as illustrated by the digitizer in the Department of Geography, York University. Coordinates can be recorded automatically on computer cards, magnetic tape, or other devices. Such systems greatly facilitate the construction of data banks where data are stored according to geographical location; research regarding spatial relationships which require numerous calculations; and computer mapping. Such applications are highly dependent on relevant computer programming
